Rated as the hottest chilli in the world by the Guinness Book of Records, ‘Carolina Reaper’ needs very little introduction. Bred in South Carolina by crossing the similarly hot Ghost pepper and a Habanero chilli, these little beasts clock in at 2.2 million Scoville units! These chilli's should be handled with extra care due to its extreme hotness, making sure to wear gloves and take care not to touch your face and eyes. Prior to the heat kicking in, you will experience a blend of chocolatey, fruity and cinnamon flavours. Each fruit will vary in appearance, with the majority of them having a scorpion-like tail. Not for the faint of heart, or taste buds! Chilli peppers may be grown undercover in a greenhouse or polytunnel, or grown outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun. Pot up young plants and grow them on in warm frost free conditions. When plants are well grown transplant them into grow bags and containers, or plant them in well prepared beds of fertile, well drained soil. When growing chilli peppers outdoors, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to transplanting them. Space pepper plants at a distance of 50cm (20") apart. Feed and water pepper plants regularly throughout the growing season to prevent the flower buds from dropping. Taller varieties of chilli peppers may require staking. Provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. In greenhouses, maintain high humidity by damping down paths daily.
