Chilli Pepper 'Grandad’s Revenge' (Capsicum chinense) is a ferocious new variety that combines jaw-dropping heat with tropical flavour. A cross involving the infamous Carolina Reaper, this chilli produces gnarled, sunfire-yellow fruits that are as fiery as they look. The flavour begins with a sweet, fruity bite before building rapidly to a scorching 1. 5–2 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This is not a chilli for the faint-hearted and should be handled with extreme care. The plants reach 150cm (60in) in height with a spread of 50cm (20in), producing prolific fruits in warm, sunny conditions. Suitable for growing in greenhouses, polytunnels, or sheltered patios, they can also be grown outdoors in full sun once hardened off. These compact yet productive plants are perfect for those looking to grow showstopping chillies at home. Start indoors in frost-free conditions, potting up young plants and growing them on until well rooted. Transplant into large containers, grow bags, or fertile, well-drained garden soil, spacing 50cm (20in) apart. Water regularly, and feed weekly with a high-potash fertiliser after fruiting begins.
