Aster ‘Berggarten’ (Aster tongolensis) is a reliable, early-flowering Michaelmas Daisy with excellent mildew resistance. This compact hardy perennial brings a splash of colour to borders and containers from late May to June, producing a profusion of large, lavender-blue flowers with vibrant orange centres. Its low-growing, mat-forming habit and dark green lance-shaped leaves make it ideal for the front of borders, patio displays, wildlife gardens, and cutting. Aster ‘Berggarten’ reaches a height of around 40cm (16in) and spreads to 50cm (20in), making it a versatile addition to many planting schemes. Loved by pollinators, it plays an important role in early-season nectar supply for bees and butterflies. Plant into fertile, moist, well-drained soil and position in full sun or partial shade. Before planting, improve the soil with garden compost or well-rotted manure. Water regularly in dry weather and apply a balanced feed throughout summer.
