Barolo holds its legendary status for a reason. It is the king of wines and the wine of kings, a title earned through centuries of excellence. At a recent tasting, six of us gathered with Paola, the fourth generation of the Sordo family. We explored the Ravera, Parussi, Perno, Monprivato, and Gabutti crus. Each wine revealed its unique personality, making it impossible to agree on a favorite. Barolo DOCG Gabutti 2011 stood out for its complexity and elegance. Still, one fact was clear: Sordo produces outstanding Barolo. Barolo is Piedmont's iconic wine, made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. It is known for its tar and roses aroma, bright ruby color that fades to garnet, firm tannins, and vibrant acidity. To be labeled Barolo DOCG, the wine must age for at least 38 months, including 18 in oak barrels. The Riserva version requires 62 months of aging. Over time, Barolo develops earthy complexity, truffle notes, and a rich, full-bodied taste.
